Picture of Susan MillerSusan Miller established Family Partnerships of Connecticut in 2001 to address a service delivery gap between families, agencies, and communities. Susan recognized the growing needs of families and their ability to access resources and services for family members with disabilities.

Susan Miller’s experience in the field of Human Services spans thirty years. Upon graduation from Southern Connecticut State University, she began her career teaching special education in the Stonington Public Schools. Susan taught students with learning disabilities, behavioral issues, autism and mental retardation. Susan developed and implemented a pre-kindergarten screening program, behavioral programs, as well as assisted traditional education teachers with the concept of inclusion.

For the last seventeen years, Susan has directed a supervised apartment program in Windsor, Connecticut. This program provided supports to individuals with a variety of special needs. Working with families and adults making a decision to move out of their home and into a community setting, has given her the privilege of being a special part of life’s progression. Susan has trained staff and developed strategies to provide quality residential support. Utilizing state agencies, community resources, and employment providers has given her the experience needed to network and provide strategic plans that promote individual growth. The professional commitments and dedication she has shown over the years is the key to educating and supporting community living successfully – with independence, dignity, respect and personal choice.

Susan is also the mother of two children with disabilities. Parenting has given her prospective from all points of view. Susan has gained experience, by living through her family’s personal struggles, uncertainties, and frustrations. She has a realistic understanding of the perseverance it takes to get through each day. Susan continues to experience the joys of her children’s accomplishments, big or small.
